Hayes Group Architects worked with a long-time Palo Alto developer to reimagine a disused auto body shop as a boutique office set within Palo Alto’s North Ventura neighborhood. Bounded by commuter rail, a power station, and a channelized creek, the site demanded a design that could screen nuisances and create a humane workplace within tight constraints.

The key move was the introduction of a new two-story “sidecar” office wing adjacent to the existing body shop building. Positioned to shield the site from the adjacent substation, the new sidecar also freed enough site area to satisfy all parking requirements at grade— avoiding the cost and disruption of a below-grade garage. Retaining the structural shell of the auto shop kept the project modest in scale and cost while preserving the existing building’s patina and character.

Outdoor experience is woven throughout the design. A tranquil forecourt provides a sheltered arrival, a ground-level dining terrace extends workday life outside, and a planted roof garden offers breakout space with mountain views. Together, these spaces offer tenants a range of settings for work and social life, giving the building a character and texture seldom found in Palo Alto’s office stock.
